How the reading exam works at B1 and at A2, from the official descriptions, and practice in the same format.

Every text here is written for this course, about work, study and daily life, with multiple choice questions of the three kinds the CvTE lists. Practice one kind of question at a time; each question shows its text again.

  • Onderwerp, bron en lezer

    Topic, source and reader. What a text is about, where it comes from, who it is written for and why.25 questions, not started

  • Betekenis, verband en conclusie

    Meaning, relation and conclusion. What a sentence or passage means, how two parts of a text relate, and what the text concludes.46 questions, not started

  • Informatie opzoeken

    Looking up information. Find one fact in the text, put steps in order, or combine two pieces of information.73 questions, not started

  • A2 practice

    Shorter, simpler texts for the A2 exam under the 2013 law, or a warm-up before B1. DUO does not publish the A2 question count, so there is no A2 mock.24 questions, not started

How the exam works

How
A booklet with the texts; the questions and answer options are on a computer.
Format
  • 6 texts with 36 questions in total (the instruction video says 35 or 36).
  • Always multiple choice with one correct answer.
  • Questions ask for the topic, the source or the reader of a text, what a passage means, how two passages relate, the conclusion, or a fact you look up.
  • Texts are about work, study and daily life in the Netherlands.
Passing
Your points are converted to a scale score. You pass with a score of 500 or higher. The CvTE does not publish how many points 500 takes, and it varies between exam days.
Dictionary
Allowed: only the Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek Nederlands als tweede taal (NT2), which you bring yourself.
