What the exam is
The inburgeringsexamen checks two things: whether your Dutch is good enough, and whether you know enough about the Netherlands. Most people who come to live here under the Wet inburgering 2021 follow the B1-route: four language exams at B1, which are the staatsexamen Nt2 Programma I, and the knowledge exam KNM, plus the work module (MAP) and the participation statement (PVT) at the municipality.
People under the 2013 law take the language exams at A2 instead. Your personal plan (PIP) and Mijn Inburgering say exactly which exams are yours; which exams you take explains the routes.
The routes under the 2021 law
- B1-routePrepares you for paid work or volunteering. Lezen, Luisteren, Schrijven and Spreken at B1 (the staatsexamen Nt2 Programma I), KNM, the Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie (MAP) and the participation statement (PVT).
- OnderwijsrouteMostly for young people; prepares you for mbo, hbo or university. The language exams at B1 or B2 (staatsexamen Nt2), KNM and the PVT.
- Zelfredzaamheidsroute (Z-route)For people for whom the other two routes are too difficult. You learn Dutch at A1. The PVT and the MAP, then a conversation with the municipality and a certificate. Language exams at A2 are allowed but not required.
