Bring valid ID
Without a valid identity document you cannot sit the exam, and a damaged one is refused too. DUO accepts, among others, a Dutch passport, identity card or driver’s license, a residence document (verblijfsvergunning type I to IV), a W-document, an EU, EEA or Swiss identity card or passport, a refugee or alien travel document, and a passport issued outside the EU.
Arrive 30 minutes early
Both DUO and the CvTE ask you to be there 30 minutes before the start. At the staatsexamen Nt2, if you are late you are not let into the room. Come alone: other people wait outside.
In the exam room
- At the staatsexamen Nt2, phones, watches and other devices go off and into a locker. You get a pen and scrap paper in the room, and hand the paper back afterwards.
- At the staatsexamen Nt2 you may bring your invitation letter, your ID and something to eat and drink. DUO asks you to bring a cup if you want a drink.
- The exam is secret. You promise not to tell anyone about it, take photos or copy questions. Breaking that is exam fraud.
The dictionary rule
At the staatsexamen Nt2 you may use one dictionary in Lezen and Schrijven: the Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek Nederlands als tweede taal (NT2), which you bring yourself, with no notes in it. No dictionary is allowed in Luisteren and Spreken, and no electronic aids at all.
Where the exams are held
DUO holds KNM and the A2 exams in Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rijswijk, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle, Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 16.30. All are wheelchair accessible; DUO has no parking of its own. The staatsexamen Nt2 is also held at six locations in the Netherlands; it cannot be taken abroad or online.
If illness or a disability makes the exam hard, you can ask for an adjusted exam; see exemptions and extra time.
