Inburgering exam prep

Results, retakes and the diploma

How long results take, what the scores mean, what to do if you fail a part, and how the diploma reaches you.

When the result arrives

  • KNM and the A2 exams: by letter within 8 weeks, and in Mijn Inburgering. The result is "geslaagd" (passed) or "niet geslaagd".
  • Staatsexamen Nt2 (B1 and B2): after about 5 weeks in Mijn DUO, and also by email and mail. The exam schedule on staatsexamensnt2.nl gives the exact day; results appear from 15.00.

What a B1 score means

Lezen and Luisteren are marked by computer, one point per right answer. Schrijven and Spreken are marked by two trained raters, with one or more points per task. Your points are converted to a scale score, and you pass a part with 500 or more. The CvTE gives the average score ranges as 200 to 700 for Lezen, 100 to 800 for Luisteren and Spreken, and 250 to 750 for Schrijven, and they differ between exam days. You cannot see which questions you got wrong: the exam stays secret.

For KNM and the A2 exams DUO says only that not every answer has to be right; it does not publish a pass mark. That is why the KNM mock exams on this site use a practice target rather than an official one.

Retaking a part

Failed a part? You retake that part only. For the staatsexamen Nt2 you can book the retake once you have your result, in the same way as the first time. Status holders get 2 free attempts per exam; further attempts are paid.

The diploma

  • Inburgeringsdiploma: download it free from Mijn Diploma's through Mijn Inburgering. The digital version counts as a certified copy, for example for naturalization, but only digitally: a print is not valid. You can get one paper diploma free; a replacement paper copy costs €72.
  • Staatsexamen Nt2: pass all four parts and DUO sends the diploma by registered mail within 4 weeks. For a single passed part you can download a certificate extract in Mijn Diploma's. Certificates and diplomas never expire.
  • Z-route: you get a certificate from the municipality, not a diploma.

If you do not finish in time

Under the 2021 law, finishing the B1-route late can mean a fine of up to €1,000. The Regeling inburgering 2021 sets the amount from the course hours you followed and how often you sat the parts: someone who followed most of the hours and sat every missing part at least twice pays far less than someone who did neither. You may get extra time when the delay is not your fault.

This is an independent, free course. It is not made by DUO or the CvTE, and its practice questions are written for this site. Nothing you answer, write or record is uploaded: it stays in this browser.

Rules and amounts change: your letter from DUO and Mijn Inburgering always win.
