Inburgering exam prep

MAP, the participation statement and ONA

Besides the language exams and KNM, inburgering has parts about work and taking part in society. Which you do depends on the law you fall under.

MAP: Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie (2021 law)

Your PIP and Mijn Inburgering say whether you take the MAP. You do it at the municipality, it is free, and it must be done before the end of your integration period. It has two parts:

  • Arbeidsmarkt (labor market): which jobs exist, which suit you and how to apply, learned through assignments.
  • Participatie: more about Dutch society, with practical assignments such as volunteering, an internship or paid work.

PVT: the participation statement

If you became obliged to integrate on or after 1 October 2017 and are registered with a municipality, you sign the participatieverklaring. The municipality sends a letter explaining what matters in the Netherlands, for example that everyone is equal, that everyone may choose what they believe, and that everyone may say what they think but discrimination is not allowed. When you have learned enough, you sign the statement that you want to take an active part in Dutch society and respect these values.

Under the 2021 law you have 3 years to sign, and the PVT is free. Under the 2013 law you have 1 year from your registration with the municipality, it costs €150 unless you are a status holder, and missing the deadline through your own fault can mean a €340 fine from DUO.

ONA: Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt (2013 law)

ONA is only for people under the 2013 law (who started integrating on or after 1 January 2015) and for voluntary integrators. It has two parts:

  1. A portfolio: 8 result cards (resultaatkaarten) with evidence, sent through Mijn Inburgering. Checking takes up to 6 weeks, and the exam costs €40.
  2. Then either a final interview of about 30 minutes with 2 DUO staff about your cards, or 64 hours of ONA course at a school.

You do not take ONA if you are under the 2021 law, started before 1 January 2015, have a Dutch-language entreeopleiding (mbo level 1) diploma, or got an exemption for work in the Netherlands.

Much of what the MAP and the PVT cover also comes up in KNM, especially in work and income and government and the rule of law.

This is an independent, free course. It is not made by DUO or the CvTE, and its practice questions are written for this site. Nothing you answer, write or record is uploaded: it stays in this browser.

Rules and amounts change: your letter from DUO and Mijn Inburgering always win.
