Luisteren: the listening exam

How the listening exam works at B1 and at A2, from the official descriptions, and practice in the same format.

Every fragment here is written for this course and read aloud by your browser’s Dutch voice, one voice per speaker. While practicing you can replay a fragment, and after answering you can read the transcript.

  • Gesprekken

    Conversations. Two or more people talk at work, at a counter, on the phone or at home.78 questions, not started

  • Eén spreker

    One speaker. An announcement, a voicemail, a radio item or a short talk by one person.36 questions, not started

  • Filmpjes

    Short films. On the exam you watch a short film and answer one question. Here a sentence says what you would see, and you listen to what is said.6 questions, not started

  • A2 practice

    Shorter, simpler fragments for the A2 exam under the 2013 law, or a warm-up before B1. DUO does not publish the A2 question count, so there is no A2 mock.12 questions, not started

How the exam works

How
On a computer with headphones.
Format
  • About 40 multiple choice questions about 5 or more recordings, plus 1 to 3 short films with one question each.
  • Before each fragment you get 25 seconds to read the question and its three or four answers.
  • The fragment starts by itself and plays once. You can go back to change an answer, but not to listen again.
  • Speakers talk about work, study and daily life. You hear real recordings: different voices, slips, repetitions, sometimes an accent or background noise, never a dialect.
Passing
Your points are converted to a scale score. You pass with a score of 500 or higher. The CvTE does not publish how many points 500 takes, and it varies between exam days.
