Hot Take connects directly to the AI provider you choose. This page explains exactly what leaves your device, where it goes, and what stays local.
What we send#
When you ask for captions, the selected photo and the settings you chose - the mode, audience, and heat level - are sent directly from your device to Google Gemini or OpenRouter, whichever you selected. Photos you don’t caption never leave your device.
Underrated Software does not receive the photo, prompt, caption, API key, your name, your email, or your photo library.
Why it leaves#
Writing a caption about a photo requires a model that can see the photo. That model does not run on your device, so the app sends the image to the provider under your own API key, receives an analysis, then asks the same provider for five takes. There is no Hot Take server in between.
The provider’s privacy policy, retention rules, and terms apply to those requests.
Your API key#
Your Gemini or OpenRouter key is stored in the iOS Keychain on this device with a device-only accessibility setting. Hot Take reads it only to authenticate requests sent directly to the provider you selected. Underrated Software never receives or stores it.
You can replace or remove either provider key from the AI Connection screen. Use that Remove key control before uninstalling if you want to ensure the credential is deleted; you should not rely on uninstalling an app to clear Keychain data.
What stays on your device#
The selected provider is saved as an ordinary app preference. API keys stay in Keychain. Image analysis results - structured text, never image pixels - may be cached on the device for up to three days, with at most 100 analysis entries. Reusing an analyzed photo can then avoid another image-analysis request. Generated caption batches are not cached by this system.
Retention#
Underrated Software has no Hot Take account, server log, photo store, prompt store, or credit ledger to retain. Local analysis cache entries expire after three days and iOS may clear caches sooner.
Gemini and OpenRouter process requests under their own retention and model-improvement policies. Review the settings and current privacy terms of the provider you choose before sending sensitive photos.
