Funny captions on your photos

Some photos deserve a comment

Hot Take looks at a photo and writes captions for it. Pick a photo, choose how much heat you want, and get five takes to choose from. Tap the one that lands and it drops onto the image, ready to drag, restyle, and share.

How it works

  1. 01

    Pick a photo

From your library. It stays on device until you ask for takes.

  2. 02

    Get five takes

Mild to wild, in the mode and voice you set.

  3. 03

    Tap the one that lands

It drops onto the image. Drag, pinch, restyle.

  4. 04

    Share it

Export with no watermark. The app is free.

The heat scale

Nothing lands by accident: the heat is always yours to set.

    A quietly excellent sandwich.

  • Light

Lunch, and a little bit of a moment.

  • Bold

    This burrito owes me nothing.

  • Wild

I would commit crimes for this.

Dozens of tourists spread across a flat clifftop high above a fjord
  • Roast

The mountain did all the work and you took the credit.

  • POV

POV: you’re about to pretend you’re the only one up here.

  • Wholesome

Nobody said much up here. Nobody needed to.

An AI photo caption generator and meme maker for iPhone

Hot Take turns a photo into five original caption ideas, then lets you put the best one directly on the image. It is made for the moment when you have a pet photo, travel shot, food picture, selfie, or group-chat image worth sharing but cannot find a funny line that sounds like you.

Choose a photo, tell Hot Take who will read it, pick a voice such as Funny, Deadpan, Roast, Wholesome, POV, or Pet Voice, and set the heat from Mild to Wild. The app uses Gemini Flash to understand what is actually in the picture and write five relevant captions instead of handing you a list of generic quotes. Pick a result, remix it, edit every word, add another text layer, choose a visual style, drag or resize it, and export the finished meme or captioned photo without a watermark.

The app itself is free. You connect your own Google Gemini or OpenRouter API key, which means there is no Hot Take account, subscription, credit pack, or developer server between your iPhone and the AI provider.

Your key. Your captions.

Hot Take has no account, credit system, purchase, or subscription. Connect a Gemini key from Google AI Studio or an OpenRouter key, and the app talks directly to that provider. The key is stored in this iPhone’s Keychain and never sent to Underrated Software.

A selected photo and your caption settings leave the phone only when you ask for takes. They go directly to the provider you chose; Hot Take has no server in the middle. Image analysis is cached on your phone for three days so reusing the same photo can avoid another image request. Provider limits, prices, and data terms still apply.

FAQ

Where do my photo and API key go?

Your key stays in this iPhone’s Keychain. When you ask for takes, Hot Take sends the selected photo, prompt, and caption settings directly to Gemini or OpenRouter using that key. Underrated Software has no server in the path and receives neither the key nor the photo. Your chosen provider’s data policy applies.

Is Hot Take free?

Yes. Hot Take has no purchase, subscription, ads, or Hot Take credits. AI requests use your Gemini or OpenRouter account instead. Gemini offers a free tier with daily limits for eligible models and projects; OpenRouter deducts paid model use from the balance you add and lets you cap a key’s spending.

Will I accidentally run up a large AI bill?

You can avoid that. Keep a Gemini project on its Free Tier if its limits are enough, or use prepaid OpenRouter credits and create a dedicated key with a small daily or monthly spending limit. Provider pricing and limits can change, so check the provider dashboard before enabling paid use.

Which provider should I choose?

Both routes use Gemini Flash, so OpenRouter is not a cheaper-model option. Gemini is the direct route and its free tier may be enough for light use. OpenRouter is useful if you already have a balance there or value a dedicated dollar-denominated spending limit, but it charges a fee when you buy credits. Compare the total current cost before choosing.

Why does a new photo make more than one AI request?

Hot Take first asks the model to understand the image, then asks it to write five captions from that analysis. A remix reuses the analysis and asks only for new captions. Image analysis is cached on the phone for three days, but caption batches are always newly generated.
