When information goes to Google#

After you agree to the in-app Google consent, photographed or imported pages are sent to Gemini when you ask the app to read them. Speaking practice sends your recorded speech or typed turns, conversation context and relevant vocabulary so the tutor can respond. Transcription, generated speech, contextual language help and session write-ups also use Gemini as needed. Requests go directly from your device to Google under your API key.

Underrated Software does not receive those requests or keep a server copy of your pages, voice, key or conversations. Google receives request data and connection information such as your IP address and processes them under its own terms.

Google’s data handling#

Google’s treatment of API content depends on your billing status and region. Its unpaid-service terms allow submitted content and responses to be used for product improvement, with possible human review. Paid-service terms exclude that improvement use but permit limited logging for abuse prevention and legal obligations. Google applies the paid-service data terms to unpaid usage in the EEA, Switzerland and UK too.

Read the current Gemini API terms (opens in a new tab) and Google Privacy Policy (opens in a new tab). Avoid sending sensitive information you do not want Google to process. Spreek cannot delete information already processed by Google or set Google’s retention periods.

What the app stores on your device#

Your vocabulary, source text, learning history, review schedule, settings, session transcripts and write-ups are stored locally. Scanned page photos are kept locally so a word can show where you met it. The app also caches generated tutor audio for playback. The current app has no saved personal speaking-clip library.

Your Gemini key is stored in the iPhone Keychain. It is not included in progress exports. Removing it in Settings stops the app from using that saved key; revoke it with Google to invalidate it elsewhere too. Device backups are governed separately by your Apple backup settings.

Progress files and community packs#

Export progress creates a file containing learning records and preferences, including source text, transcripts and write-ups. It excludes page photographs and your API key. You choose where to save or share it; the storage service or recipient you choose may receive that data. Keep progress files private. Restore progress replaces local learning data after confirmation.

Opening a remote community-pack link contacts the host of that file, which can receive connection information such as your IP address. Import only files and links from sources you trust.

Your controls and retention#

Camera, photo selection, microphone and notification permissions are controlled by iOS. You can paste text instead of using the camera and type instead of recording speech. Delete your scanned pages in Data & privacy removes the local photographs while keeping vocabulary.

Local learning data remains until you remove or replace it, or delete the app. Exported files, device backups and information processed by Google have separate lifecycles; deleting the app does not remove those copies. Underrated Software has no account database or credit ledger to delete.

Analytics and contact#

Spreek contains no advertising or third-party analytics SDK. We do not sell your learning data or use it for advertising. If you contact us, we receive the information you choose to include so we can reply. Please do not send API keys. For privacy questions or requests, use our contact page.
