Using Spreek#

Spreek is a language-learning aid from Underrated Software. Use it in accordance with applicable law and the terms of the store or distribution channel from which you obtained it. You are responsible for the material you scan, import and share, and for having the rights needed to use it. Your learning records remain yours.

The app’s source code is licensed under AGPL-3.0-or-later. That licence governs your rights to use, modify and redistribute the covered code; these terms do not remove those rights.

Gemini key and usage charges#

Spreek is free and has no in-app subscription or speaking-credit purchases. You supply your own Gemini API key. Google’s eligibility rules, terms, quotas and any usage charges apply to your Google project. You are responsible for protecting the key, monitoring usage and choosing whether to enable billing.

Models, prices and spending controls can change independently of Spreek. We do not guarantee a fixed cost per session, free access to every model or uninterrupted AI availability. Removing a key from Spreek does not revoke it at Google.

AI output and learning progress#

AI can misread a page, transcribe speech incorrectly or suggest an incorrect translation, grammar correction or grade. Review output before relying on it. Session assessments and placement levels are learning aids, not certified language assessments.

Keep a progress export before replacing a device or restoring data. Restore progress replaces local learning records after confirmation. Progress files exclude page photographs, audio files and API keys.

Dictionary, recordings and packs#

The dictionary is adapted from Wiktionary and carries its applicable Creative Commons share-alike terms. Recordings retain their individual speaker credits and licences. The app’s attribution screen provides the relevant credits. Those content licences are separate from the app’s code licence.

Community packs may come from third parties. Their content, availability and licences are the responsibility of their publishers; importing a pack does not grant rights beyond its applicable licence.

Acceptable use#

Do not use Spreek to infringe others’ rights, harass people or generate unlawful content. Follow Google’s applicable API terms and usage policies. Do not share someone else’s private information without permission or use a key you are not authorised to use.

Availability and liability#

The app is provided as-is, to the extent permitted by law. We cannot guarantee that AI services or remote packs will always be available or error-free. To the extent permitted by law, our liability is limited to the amount you paid us for Spreek in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms excludes rights or liabilities that applicable law does not allow us to exclude.
