What an AVIF file is
AVIF is a newer image format built on the AV1 video codec. It makes files smaller than JPEG, often smaller than WEBP too, so more websites serve it, and saving an image from them gives you an .avif. Support outside browsers is patchier: older versions of macOS and Windows, many editors and most upload forms do not take it. What is an AVIF file? explains more.
How this converter works
The page decodes the AVIF with your browser's own decoder, which current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari include, and saves the picture as a JPG. An older browser that cannot read AVIF says so for each file instead of producing a broken JPG. Transparent areas come out white, because JPEG has no transparency.

Are my images uploaded?
No. The page converts them inside your browser. Nothing about the images, not even their names, is sent anywhere.
Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats there is, and JPEG is over thirty years old. The same picture needs more bytes as a JPG; a lower quality setting brings the size down.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Choose or drop as many as you like and each gets its own download link. Download all saves every one; your browser may ask once whether the page can download several files. Very large batches are limited by your device's memory.
