Make a video smaller, or turn a MOV into an MP4
Shrink a video to fit a chat app or an email, or turn a QuickTime or iPhone video into an MP4 that plays anywhere. It all happens on your device, so the video is never uploaded.
MOV and MP4
MOV and MP4 are two containers for the same kinds of video and sound. An iPhone or QuickTime recording is almost always HEVC or H.264 video with AAC sound, which an MP4 can hold as it is. So "Just make it an MP4" copies the video and sound across without encoding them again: it takes seconds, and the picture is exactly what it was.
How the size target works
Pick a limit and the page works out the bitrate that fits it from the video's length, leaving the sound as it is and a little room for the file itself. It then chooses the largest resolution that bitrate can fill well, and tells you before you start whether the result should look good, fine on a phone, or rough.
Every frame is then encoded again with your device's encoder. If the result still comes out over the limit, it tries once more a little smaller.
HEVC or H.264
HEVC (also called H.265) makes smaller files at the same quality, and plays on Apple devices and most recent computers and phones. H.264 is older and bigger, but plays on practically everything, including older Windows PCs that need an add-on for HEVC. Automatic keeps HEVC when it only copies, and writes H.264 when it has to encode; you can choose either under More options.
Which browsers work
The page uses the video encoder built into your browser, so it needs one that lets web pages use it: Safari 26 on a Mac, iPhone or iPad, or Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer. Anywhere else, the page says so instead of offering a file picker.
Firefox cannot write AAC sound. That only matters when the sound has to be converted, which iPhone recordings do not need; if yours does, the page offers to remove the sound or to use another browser.
FAQ
Is my video uploaded?
No. It is read, converted and saved inside your browser, using your device's own video encoder. Nothing about it, not even its name, is sent anywhere.
How long does it take?
A MOV to MP4 copy takes seconds. Making a video smaller encodes every frame again, so it depends on the video's length and resolution and on your device: a computer with a hardware encoder is much faster than an older phone. The progress bar shows the time left.
Will it lose quality?
Not when it only copies. Making a video smaller always costs some detail; the estimate before you start says how much to expect, and a bigger size keeps more.
Why is my MP4 the same size as the MOV?
Because it was copied, not re-encoded: the same video and sound in a different container. To make it smaller, choose "Make it smaller" and a size.
What are the limits for WhatsApp, Discord and email?
WhatsApp sends videos of up to 16 MB as media. Discord raised its free upload limit from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026. Gmail takes up to 25 MB of attachments per email, and other email services often allow less. These were checked in September 2026 and do change, so the buttons show the number as well as the name.
