Create a Gemini key and connect it to Spreek

Spreek uses your own Google Gemini API key for reading photographed pages and practising with the tutor. The app is free. Any AI charges belong to your Google project, and requests go directly from your iPhone to Google.

Create the key with Google

1. Open Google AI Studio’s API Keys page (opens in a new tab) and sign in with your Google account.
2. Create a key in a project you control. A new account may already have a default project; an existing account may need to select or import one.
3. Copy the key. Treat it like a password and keep it out of screenshots, shared notes and support messages.

Save it in Spreek

1. Open Spreek → Settings → Gemini key. The same key card also appears during setup and before a conversation if you have not connected a key.
2. Paste into the key field and tap Save key. The saved state shows only the last four characters.
3. Read Where your practice goes and choose I agree if you want the app to send the listed information to Google.
4. Try one page or a short conversation. Saving a key stores it; a successful request confirms that your project can use the required model.

Check billing before practising

Creating a key does not itself enable paid billing. Check the project that owns it: an existing project may already have billing attached. Free quota and model availability vary, and not every voice feature is guaranteed to be free. Use Google’s pricing table (opens in a new tab) for current rates.

If you enable paid usage, review the project’s Spend page and available spending controls. Google documents project spend caps with delayed enforcement, so overages are possible. Cloud budget alerts alone do not stop requests. See the key and billing guide.

If the first request fails

• Check the internet connection and the consent card in Gemini key settings.
• If the key is rejected, create a fresh key in AI Studio and save it again. Google is transitioning older standard keys to authorization keys.
• For a quota or billing error, check that exact project in AI Studio. Repeated retries will not replenish a depleted quota.
• If text works but the tutor voice does not, check model availability and voice-model quota. Spreek can use different models for text and speech.

Remove or replace the key

Paste and save a replacement in the same screen, or tap Remove key. Removing the saved key does not delete your vocabulary. It also does not revoke the credential at Google: disable or delete an exposed key in Google’s controls, then check its usage.
