Practise speaking Dutch when you have no partner

Spreek
By Underrated SoftwareUpdated

Start with something you can describe: your morning, a picture or a page you just read. Choose a few Dutch words you want to use, speak in full sentences, then note where you got stuck. A short repeatable task gives solo practice a clear finish.

A ten-minute practice routine

  1. Spend two minutes recalling a few words without looking at their meanings.
  2. Speak for a few minutes about one familiar topic, trying to use those words.
  3. Write down one missing phrase or recurring mistake.
  4. Try the difficult sentence again with the new form, then finish.

You can use a separate voice-recording app to listen back, or practise with a tutor that responds. Shadowing a short Dutch recording can help you notice rhythm; follow it with your own sentence so you also practise choosing the words yourself.

Use your vocabulary in Spreek

In Spreek, choose Practice your vocabulary to work selected words into the conversation. Choose Free talk when a topic matters more than the word list. Connect your Gemini key before starting.

Hold to talk and release to send. Slide up to keep recording, or type your answer when speaking is inconvenient. With Correct my mistakes enabled, corrections appear in writing while the tutor’s voice carries on the conversation.

Use one correction in the next conversation

Tap Wrap up and read the write-up. Look at one correction you can reuse rather than trying to fix everything at once. Session outcomes feed the review schedule, and you can add new words from the chat. Revisit the saved conversation when you want the context.

An AI tutor can misunderstand you or offer a poor correction. Check doubtful advice with a reliable reference or a teacher, and keep opportunities for real conversation in your routine.

FAQ

Can I start before I feel fluent?

Yes. Use simple descriptions and familiar vocabulary. Reduce the task until you can finish it, then gradually add complexity.

Are typed turns useful too?

They let you practise sentence construction and vocabulary. Include spoken practice when your goal is retrieving the words aloud.
