Dutch has two definite articles: de and het. Learn a singular noun together with its article, such as de winkel or het boek. Plurals use de, and singular diminutives use het. Those are useful rules, but they do not let you predict the article of every ordinary singular noun.
Two rules you can use immediately

Notice that the plural rule still applies to diminutives: het boekje becomes de boekjes. Do not treat every word that happens to end in the letters je as a diminutive; check the actual word and meaning.
Build cards that test the article too
- Write the noun with its article on the answer side: de winkel, not just winkel.
- Add the plural and one short phrase you might actually say.
- Recall the article out loud before revealing the answer. If you missed it, include that in your self-assessment.
- Later, use the noun in a new sentence so the article has to come back during speech.
Keep exceptions attached to a real example
Patterns can help you make a guess, but a dictionary entry settles the word you are learning. If the article surprises you, save a short example from your reading. The aim is to retrieve the phrase without reconstructing a rule every time.
